ID166-Wait,” “Hold up,” “Pause,” I Need a Moment” What Next?
Question: Can a player pick a tile from the wall if another player says, “wait,” indicating they are thinking about taking the most recent discard for exposure?
Answer: It is permissible for a player to say “wait,” “pause,” or a similar phrase to indicate they are considering a call. In that moment, play temporarily stops while the player decides. However, it’s important to understand what this does—and what it does not do. According to Mah Jongg Made Easy (2024), a player must ultimately verbalize their intent with a clear statement such as “I’ll call that” or “I’ll take that.”
The definition of “Hold” (see Explanation of Terms, pp. 32–33) clarifies that this is simply a way to momentarily stop play before possibly making a call. A player may also use the word “wait.”
👉 The key point: Saying “hold” or “wait” does not establish priority.
If a player with priority (based on turn order or call type) makes a valid call, they are entitled to the tile—even if another player has said “wait.” Clarity and proper timing matter. A pause is not a claim—it’s only a moment to think.
