ID44-Pause a Beat Then Begin Your Turn

Question: I’ve often played with very experienced and fast players. At times, I feel as if I don’t even have a few seconds to decide if I want the discarded tile. What is proper protocol for this sort of thing?

Answer:  Etiquette plays an important part when it comes to picking and racking. Proper etiquette would be to “pause a beat” before you pick and rack your tile. This allows a reasonable amount of time for the others to hear a discarded tile and decide whether they want it. After all, Mah Jongg isn’t about who can pick the next tile the fastest. This ruling is not in Mah Jongg Made Easy.
