ID65-Dead Hand-Exchanging Jokers from a Dead Hand
Question:
Can Jokers be exchanged from a hand that has been declared dead?
Answer:
Yes—but only if the Joker is part of a valid exposure made before the hand was declared dead.
Jokers in valid exposures remain available for exchange, even after a hand is dead.
However, Jokers that are part of incorrect exposures at the time the hand is declared dead must be returned to the player’s rack (on the sloped portion). This applies whether the error is recognized immediately or later in the game.
What Qualifies as an Incorrect Exposure?
Any exposure that does not meet NMJL requirements is considered incorrect and must be returned to the rack. This includes:
- Exposures made on a concealed hand
- All exposures if Mah Jongg is declared on a concealed hand
- Any exposure that was made in error prior to the hand being declared dead
Returning incorrect exposures to the rack helps maintain clarity at the table, especially when valid exposures with Jokers may still be present.
Important Note on Concealed Hands
If a concealed hand is exposed in error and declared dead, the entire hand is returned to the rack.
