The Fresh Tile Approach
Let me introduce you to one of my favorite strategies, The “fresh tile” approach.
What’s a “Fresh Tile”?
A fresh tile is any tile that hasn’t yet been discarded on the table. Getting fresh tiles out early is one of the best ways to disrupt your opponents’ ability to build their hands. When you discard a fresh tile early, it’s more likely your opponent isn’t ready to call it. But if it is a part of their hand, they may be forced to expose too soon, often using a joker, or worse, the only joker they have. Either way, you’ve gained a strategic edge.
Why Holding Tiles Can Sabotage Your Own Hand.
As your hand improves, tiles you are holding get, “hotter and hotter”. While you think it might be a strategic move, you are setting yourself up for trouble. When you finally pick the tiles that sets you for Mah Jongg, what do you have to discard? Often, it’s that “hot” tile you’ve been holding back. And now it’s likely your discard becomes someone else’s Mah Jongg.
Smart Discarding: A Priority List
- Tiles that you are not using that never leave your rack during the Charleston: These are fresh tiles.
- Tiles passed to you in the final right or optional across pass: These are also fresh tile, and often a tile your opponent had to give up. Discarding these early can block their potential recovery or force an early call.
- Other discard options based on table observation: Discard tiles not yet seen on the table before you start duplicating existing discards.
Final Thought: Remember, Fresh Tiles Become Hot Tiles the longer the game is in play. To avoid this use the “fresh tile” approach.
