Torn Between Two Mah Jongg Hands
One of the most common dilemmas Mah Jongg players face is when they are torn between two hands. But, instead of thinking of this as a challenge, look at this as an exciting moment because you have options! But making the right choice can be the difference between a confident win and an uphill battle.
Step 1: When you are Torn Between Two Mah Jongg Hands, Assess the Readiness of Each Hand
The first thing I consider is how far along each hand is. Ask yourself:
✅ Which hand is closer to completion?
✅ Do I need multiple lucky picks to complete one hand versus the other?
✅ Do I already have my pairs or single tiles for a grouping such as NEWS or the year category?
If one hand is just a few tiles away from being set, and the other still requires several pieces to come together, the choice is obvious—go with the stronger, more developed hand!
Step 2: Check the Discards and Exposures When Torn Between Two Mah Jongg Hands
Mah Jongg isn’t just about what you need—it’s about what’s happening on the table. Look around:
✅ Are any of the tiles you need already discarded? If so, how many?
✅ Did your opponents expose tiles that suggest they might also need the same ones you do?
✅ Has your opponent exposed a grouping indicating you have a partner using the same tiles?
If one hand requires a tile that has already been discarded multiple times, it’s probably best to shift focus to the alternative hand.
Step 3: Flexibility Matters When Torn Between Two Mah Jongg Hands
Some hands lock you into a narrow set of tiles, while others offer flexibility. I prefer to lean into hands that allow for more options, especially if I’m still a few tiles away from Mah Jongg.
✅ Does one hand give you multiple ways to win?
✅ Can you stay open and flexible within your category?
When in doubt, choose the hand that allows you to pivot to another hand rather than locking yourself into one specific tile.
Step 4: Consider The Joker Factor When Torn Between Two Mah Jongg Hands
Jokers can make or break a hand. Consider:
✅ Does one hand allow you to use Jokers more effectively?
✅ Are you relying on singles or pairs that cannot utilize Jokers?
If one hand depends on single tiles or pairs, while the other gives you Joker flexibility, I’d lean toward the latter.
Final Decision: Commit with Confidence
Once I’ve weighed all these factors, I make my decision and stick with it. Constantly flip-flopping between hands can slow you down and cause you to miss opportunities. Trust your instincts, and if a new opportunity presents itself, be ready to pivot strategically.
So, the next time you’re torn between two hands, take a deep breath and ask yourself: What Would Debbie Do? Follow these steps, trust your strategy, and play with confidence!
