Following are Mahjpedia’s top picks for the most significant changes in MJME 2024:

  1. Indicating where East’s wall is kept after the break. This new rule is on page 10, paragraph 1.
  2. Mention that tiles are not racked until all have been dealt out and everyone confirms they have the correct number. This new rule is on page 11, paragraph 1.
  3. Clarifying that it is incumbent upon the player stopping the Charleston to announce their intentions. Previously this was not clear and some groups would ask their opponents if everyone wanted to continue. This new rules is on page 13 under heading, SECOND CHARLESTON.
  4. The second Charleston may be stopped as long as no player has looked at the tiles being passed to them.” This new rule can be found on Page 20, paragraph one.
  5. If a player pushes out the wrong wall before the previous wall is exhausted, causing another player to pick from the wrong wall, both players’ hands are “dead.” As an example, this would apply to a tile from a previous wall, hidden behind the next wall pushed out. This rule is on Page 20, 16(c)
  6. Rewording the “dead” hand declaration to state that your hand is not officially dead until another player verifies it is dead. This is mentioned on page 19, #15 and page 20, #18.
  7. In 2020, if you picked from the wrong end and racked it you hand was dead. The 2024 version has removed “and racked.” So, if you pick from the wrong end regardless of whether you rack, your hand is dead.
  8. Regarding the Joker Exchange process, this sentence is new, “If no announcement is made and the symbol tile touches the table, it is considered a discard, and the Joker may not be redeemed.” This additional wording is on Page 24, #13.
  9. Added wording to clarify that a commitment to a call is when either you placed the called tile on the top of your rack or have taken tiles out of your rack and placed them on top. This amendment is on page 31, paragraph #2.
